The start

Kymco is the abbreviation for Kwang Yang Motor Co. Ltd from Taiwan is a manufacturer of motorcycles, scooters and quads. This largest scooter manufacturer from Taiwan was founded in 1963, after splitting from Honda where they originally made parts for.

Milestones

In March 1970 the first factory opened. In 1977, the second followed. In 1995 the brand Kymco officially launched. In this year the 100,000,000th Freeway 125 rolled off the line. In 2003 the first heavy motorcycle released, the XCTING 500.

Kymco nowadays

Kymco has been building scooters since 1970. From 1992 they used the name Kymco as brand name for Scooters. Around 3000 people work at Kymco. These people produce almost half a million vehicles annually. Besides Taiwan there are also factories in Indonesia and China

In early 2008, KYMCO was chosen by BMW to supply the engines for their G450 X Enduro bike. The optional range extender in the BMW i3 is also supplied by Kymco. In late 2013, Kawasaki announced that their new J300 scooter is manufactured in partnership with Kymco. It is based on a Kymco Downtown 300i.

Kymco USA is headquartered in Spartanburg, South Carolina and sells through nearly 600 franchised dealerships. Kymco's 2020 product line in the United States includes 10 scooters, eight side by sides, 14 ATVs and two small displacement motorcycles. Kymco was the Official Scooter and ATV for the NHRA and with Gray Motorsports primary sponsor of the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.
